The Creative Women of Oklahoma Award was created by and began as the Author’s Award during the biennium of President Beth Schieber, Xi Chapter, Okarche, Oklahoma, 1995-1997. The criterion for the award was that the book be written by an Oklahoma female author. The publication date for review would be two years behind the current calendar year; hence, books published in 1995 would be considered for the 1997 award. The first Author’s Awards were presented at the Gamma (OK) State Convention, 1997. The awards were to Sherrin Watkins, Children’s Division, for Green Eyed Snake and to Anna Meyers, Young Adult Division, forGraveyard Girl.
In 2000, two changes were approved by the Gamma (OK) State Convention in the area of criterion for review selection. One, the published text may be an adult book that would be of interest to young adults and/or children. Secondly, the author may be a joint author.
Beginning in 2004, another change was adopted so that there were two categories adopted for the award. The two divisions were Children and Young Adult. In 2007, the Gamma (OK) State Convention adopted a third area for the Author’s Award. The new division was the Illustrator’s Award. It was also determined that there did not have to be an award in each of the divisions due to the limitations set for the review criterion.
The Author’s Award became the Creative Women of Oklahoma Award in 2010. The name of the Committee was also changed to Creative Women of Oklahoma. The area of poetry was added to the review categories in 2011.
The Creative Women of Oklahoma Committee is a composed of six women. Each Oklahoma Sate President appoints three members to serve four years. Consequently, there are three new members each biennium.
